Stretch marks occur when the skin is forced to expand or contract quickly. The rapid stretching of the skin’s collagen causes the marks. For example, during pregnancy, the body changes a great deal in a short nine- month period. Your skin simply isn’t elastic enough to cope with these changes without leaving some lasting effect. In most cases, the reddish or pinkish marks appear where stretching is most likely to occur: the abdomen, the breasts and the arms and legs.
How It Works
To effectively treat stretch marks, collagen production is boosted on the affected area, as well as causing collagen contraction and skin tightening. This is achieved using a combination of lasers. The lasers work at different wavelengths to target specific layers of skin. Results can vary from patient to patient. Stretch marks affecting darker skin require more treatments as the lasers have to be used on a lower setting to avoid hypo-pigmentation.
Fractional CO2 SmartXide Laser
This laser is used to promote collagen growth, the depth at which this laser is operated is the optimum depth for maximum collagen production. SmartXide is a carbon dioxide laser that stimulates rejuvenation by targeting the area with a small wand-like device. Unlike other CO2 lasers, the SmartXide removes a customised pattern of thousands of microscopic ‘dots’ rather than the entire skin surface so there is no longer the discomfort and downtime of previous laser machines.
Erbium Yag Laser Dermabrasion
Laser Dermabrasion works without the need of chemicals and is extremely simple, virtually painless and for all ages. The peel is a controlled depth peel performed with the Erbium YAG laser that results in very little downtime. The laser lightly ablates the very top layers of the skin causing it to peel. This polishes the skin making it appear clearer and smoother. The downtime can be anywhere from a couple of hours to 2-3 days
For both treatments, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied prior to treatment meaning the procedure can be performed with only minimal discomfort. Once the area is numb, the skin is lasered, by guiding the hand-piece over the area.
The lasers need to be used relatively ‘hot’ for these treatments as this achieves deeper penetration of the skin, which further improves results.
Following treatment we recommend the Avene Tolerance Extreme range. These cleansers and moisturisers have been specifically designed for sensitive skin which has become sensitised due to dermatological treatment. it contains a high concentration of thermal water making it highly hydrating. It is also manufactured in a completely sterile environment, which makes it ideal for skin which may be ‘open’ following treatment.
We also recommend Avene Thermal Water. The unique composition soothes and softens the skin and restores skin’s natural balance. It is bottled directly from the source meaning it is bacteriologically pure making it ideal for post laser procedures.
