In the epidermis, the upper layer of the skin, are the cells, melanocytes that produce melanin. Melanin is the chemical that changes our skin’s tone. Our genetics tell these cells how much melanin to release and this determines our skin colour. Sun exposure, to UVA and UVB rays causes the ageing skin to develop areas where there is a greater concentration of melanocytes. It is these “ageing melanocytes” that are more responsive to UV rays and thus become darker.

How It Works

Depending on the type of pigmentation, Natura uses either/or both the Erbium Yag Laser Dermabrasion treatment and the fractional CO2 SmartXide Laser. This is because all skin types respond differently to treatment. Having a choice of lasers to choose from ensures you are treated with the right laser for your skin type.

Erbium Yag Laser Dermabrasion

If the age spot is very superficial a laser dermabrasion using the Erbium Yag will achieve results. Laser Dermabrasion works without the need of chemicals and is extremely simple, virtually painless and for all ages. It’s frequently used on the neck, hands and décolletage, as well as the face.

The peel is a controlled depth peel performed with the Erbium YAG laser that results in very little downtime. The laser lightly ablates the very top layers of the skin causing it to peel. This makes the skin appear clearer and more refreshed. The downtime can be anywhere from a couple of hours to 2-3 days depending on the depth of treatment and area treated.

Fractional CO2 SmartXide Laser

This laser is most effective on older skin with severe photo damage. This is because the age spots these patients have tend to be thicker as the patient’s skin is also thicker, therefore requiring a more aggressive treatment.

SmartXide is a carbon dioxide laser that stimulates rejuvenation by targeting the area with a small wand-like device. Unlike other CO2 lasers, the SmartXide removes a customised pattern of thousands of microscopic ‘dots’ rather than the entire skin surface so there is no longer the discomfort and downtime of previous laser machines.

The high-energy laser causes the outer layers of the epidermis to peel away as the skin heals. The laser also heats the dermis, which stimulates the production of new collagen. As the new skin cells develop, skin becomes smoother and clearer.

The Procedure

For both treatments, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied prior to treatment meaning the procedure can be performed with only minimal discomfort. Once the area is numb, the skin is lasered, by guiding the hand-piece over the area.

  • Quick treatment
  • Painless
  • Added bonus of smoother skin from laser treatment
  • Treatments carried out by experienced Doctors. This is important, as age spots must be adequately diagnosed so that a melanoma or other types of skin cancer can be ruled out. Laser treatments that remove the pigmented area can make it more difficult in the future to successfully diagnose a cancerous lesion.

Treatment Prices

Depend on the condition, pigmentation issues can be treated with a number of different lasers. During your free skin evaluation our doctors will advise you on the best treatment, giving a price based on your individual requirements.
