Can counselling clear your skin

The team at Natura Skin clinic are always on the look out for incredible news and interesting stories. Today in the news we found a brilliant and heart warming story about a woman who suffered from debilitating psoriasis. She has suffered for years, covering her body from head to toe with an array of medications and always opted for full coverage, when it came to clothing.

Finally after years of stress and worry, she was referred to a counsellor and during sessions realised her whole life revolved around her skin.

After a few sessions of talking, thinking about her life and putting things into perspective she noticed her stress levels had calmed incredibly. By the end of her first year of therapy, the psoriasis on her body had halved.

Psychodermatology is the process of treating skin conditions with counselling. Therapists tend to treat patients using antibiotics and a course of Therapy. It enables sufferers to calm down, put their lives in order and learn how to relax and deal with stressful situations.

Many complaints can be directly connected to stress. It is incredible what the brain can do to a body and to the skin through the nervous system. They are intrinsically linked. When we are scared, we break out in a cold sweat, when we’re embarrassed, we blush.

Stress triggers hormones in the body such as testosterone. This increases the production of sebum from our glands and can contribute to acne. They key is to relieve those stressful thoughts and situations, then try and gain some of the feel good endorphins, these can be made by exercise and laughter.

Psychodermatology is a great way to treat conditions, but if all else fails what other options are there?

The answer is many and they are affordable, in fact you will find treatments in your local area. If you are suffering skin conditions, think about your stress levels and try to relax.

A spot of bother

At any point in our lives, we could suffer from an outbreak of spots. This could be due to hormones, to our diets, to stress or a reaction to something we have used on our face.

Spots, white heads, black heads, open pores and fat spots can still be common post 30. You would think we grow out of such things, but to our dismay it is not so. Sometimes no matter how many different cleansers you try, face masks you trowel on or products which promise you clear stunning skin, we are still left in a spot of bother.

The anatomy of a spot.

A spot is basically a blocked pore which fills with sebum (pus) and therefore has that yellow appearance. If your skin is particularly oily, you may find you suffer from spots more than those with dry skin and not just on the facial area, spots can appear on the chest, back, shoulders and arms. This can cause someone to be incredibly conscious.

One of the best ways to avoid and reduce spots is obviously cleansing the skin, but also helping your body shed the dead skin, revealing newer, glowing, fresh cells.

There are a number of ways of doing this, soap alone will clean but not help shift those dead cells, exfoliation will. There are a number of products you can purchase to help exfoliate the skin on a regular basis.

If, however, you have suffered or do suffer with major bouts of spots, you may need something a little more intense, such as Laser Dermabrasion, which is virtually painless.

The hand held device is guided across the skin and deeply exfoliates, which reveals new glowing skin and can reduce spots, blackheads and open pores.

The results are incredible and long lasting.

Avoid that spotty look, there are so many treatments available, it is quite simple to get out of that spot of bother.

Rosy glow – Treating Rosacea

This time of year can cause many to have that rosy cheeked natural glow. However, what if you seem to have that rosy glow all year round, some would love to have naturally pink cheeks, it would save a pretty penny on blusher, but for others, rosy cheeks are not all they cracked up to be.

Rosacea is a common skin complaint and is prevalent between those aged 30-60. It tends to affect more women than men and can be a rather embarrassing skin condition.

If mainly affects the facial area and those of fair skin, 1 in 10 people suffer from Rosacea.

What is Rosacea?

Despite being common, we still don’t know everything about the condition Rocacea. It can cause redness and flushing of the skin, some of the finer veins can appear and in some cases the skin can thicken around the affected area such as the nose. It can also cause an increase in spots.

What are the causes of Rosacea?

The actual cause of Rosacea is unknown, but research by the National Rosacea Society has identified the most common reasons why Rosacea may flare up – these include, direct sunlight, cold weather, alcohol, stress, hot drinks and eating spicy foods.

How to treat Rosacea.

Firstly, it is suggested to avoid all of those elements which can trigger the pink flushing, but sometimes this is easier said than done.

Luckily there are a range of treatments available which use the advanced technical power of lasers.

We’re talking about small  medical grade lasers which are concentrated on the area and basically encourage the veins and blood vessels which cause Rosacea to heal, thus reducing the signs of redness.

Some may think only the rich and famous could afford this treatment, but believe it or not, it is affordable and can reduce Rosacea, giving a brighter, less rosy appearance.

The only downside of having this treatment is that if required, you will have to go out and purchase some blusher or bronzer.
