What causes my Rosacea to flare up?

“Doctor… I am an active guy who really enjoys being outdoors at the weekend, but after a couple of hours outdoors I have noticed that my skin is becoming red and irritated, what should I do?”

Rosacea is a more common skin condition than most people think… In the UK, over five percent of the population is currently suffers from it.

And it isn’t just us regular folk who are unfortunate enough to have it. Cameron Diaz, Renee Zellweger, and more closer to home Carol Smiley have all publically acknowledged that they have also been suffering with Rosacea.

Surprisingly, in a lot of Rosacea cases it isn’t just the redness that bothers patients, but the irritating, burning sensation that comes with the skin condition. This can flare up significantly when exposed to the elements.

A commonly asked question that sufferers ask their doctor or dermatologist is “I know I have Rosacea, but what is causing my Rosacea to flare up all the time?”

Rosacea triggers need to be looked at on a case-by-case basis, but in many situations the triggers tend to be the same. A frequent suggestion by medical professionals is to keep a diary and write down any diet, lifestyle and environmental changes that occur around flare-ups.

A study conducted by the National Rosacea Society in the US, interviewed 1066 sufferers and asked them from their personal experience what they believed were the most commonly associated triggers of Rosacea flare-up’s.

That’s all well and good some may say, but how am I to get rid of it? Or at least minimise the incidence of flare ups?

Lifestyle changes can be tough and in some cases unrealistic. Sufferers who are particularly fond of the outdoors, maintain an active lifestyle or simply enjoy having a few drinks at the weekend; advice to maybe go a little easier on these activities, can fall on deaf ears.

If you suffer from Rosacea and these lifestyle changes are not something you would be willing to compromise, then realistically you will have to look into either having a course of laser treatment or to see what medication you could perhaps take. If this is the case then you should always seek advice from a qualified, medical professional.

Remember, everyone’s skin is different and there are many different categories of Rosacea. A laser treatment or course of medication that that works on one patient may not necessarily work as well on another.

An experienced doctor or dermatologist should be able to advise you on the best course of action to treat both your Rosacea, and to minimise flare ups in the future.

Exercise and Rosacea

“I love exercising, but it seems that with Rosacea I can’t avoid flare-ups and keep fit at the same time. What should I do?”

Just because you have Rosacea, doesn’t mean you should stop having an active lifestyle. A few little adjustments to the way you keep fit can make all the difference when it comes to managing Rosacea.

Here is a little list of ways to minimize Rosacea flare-ups. We aren’t saying that you should try and follow all the points below, but where you feel you can accommodate a few of these tips, it certainly won’t do you any harm..

Train more often, for shorter periods – This is a tough one for exercise junkies. The severity of flushes can be dramatically reduced by shorting the length of exercise sessions.

Exercise when it’s a little cooler – Early in the morning, or late in the evening is best.  Try and avoid training when the weather is too hot and exercise in the shade when possible.

Don’t train as hard – Okay… If you are going to the Olympics in 2012 then this may not be an option, but just bare in mind, if you are known for pushing yourself to the max, then this may well be triggering flare-ups.

Try to keep cool when exercising – Whether it’s spraying your face with cool water, or keeping a damp towel around your neck when exercising, keeping cool makes all the difference when it comes to avoiding flushes during exercise.

Swim, swim, swim – If you want to keep cool when exercising, then there is nothing better than swimming. Its also low impact, so you are keeping fit and looking after your joints.

Wear Suncream – Exposure to sunlight can cause Rosacea to flare up. Apply suncream thirty minutes before exercising will help you protect your skin. Also try and choose a suncream that doesn’t irritate your skin.

Rosy glow – Treating Rosacea

This time of year can cause many to have that rosy cheeked natural glow. However, what if you seem to have that rosy glow all year round, some would love to have naturally pink cheeks, it would save a pretty penny on blusher, but for others, rosy cheeks are not all they cracked up to be.

Rosacea is a common skin complaint and is prevalent between those aged 30-60. It tends to affect more women than men and can be a rather embarrassing skin condition.

If mainly affects the facial area and those of fair skin, 1 in 10 people suffer from Rosacea.

What is Rosacea?

Despite being common, we still don’t know everything about the condition Rocacea. It can cause redness and flushing of the skin, some of the finer veins can appear and in some cases the skin can thicken around the affected area such as the nose. It can also cause an increase in spots.

What are the causes of Rosacea?

The actual cause of Rosacea is unknown, but research by the National Rosacea Society has identified the most common reasons why Rosacea may flare up – these include, direct sunlight, cold weather, alcohol, stress, hot drinks and eating spicy foods.

How to treat Rosacea.

Firstly, it is suggested to avoid all of those elements which can trigger the pink flushing, but sometimes this is easier said than done.

Luckily there are a range of treatments available which use the advanced technical power of lasers.

We’re talking about small  medical grade lasers which are concentrated on the area and basically encourage the veins and blood vessels which cause Rosacea to heal, thus reducing the signs of redness.

Some may think only the rich and famous could afford this treatment, but believe it or not, it is affordable and can reduce Rosacea, giving a brighter, less rosy appearance.

The only downside of having this treatment is that if required, you will have to go out and purchase some blusher or bronzer.
