Even Supermodels Have Bad Skin Days

She is more used to being seen gracing the covers of Vogue, but when supermodel Lily Cole stepped out for lunch this week she proved that even supermodels have bad skin days.

The 23 year old recently admitted that she preferred the ‘natural look’, and the model turned actress certainly showed that when she dined out wearing little or no makeup. Her natural look revealed a less than perfect complexion, with her skin appearing red and spotty.

But Lily isn’t alone. Thousands of women still suffer from mild acne long after their teenage years, when the problem is more common.

Most skin experts believe that an increase in the male hormone, testosterone, is one of the main causes. It creates an excess of sebum — an oily/waxy substance produced by the sebaceous glands to lubricate the skin. Too much sebum causes a build-up of oil and dead skin cells in hair follicle pores. Bacteria make their way to the blockage, and the growth in bacteria causes acne.

Many facets of modern life are also thought to exacerbate it, including junk food, the excessive consumption of sugar, hormone imbalances and stress. Interestingly, there’s also a growing school of thought that acne is genetic.

Lily was recently named as the Body Shop’s first brand ambassador and has since launched her own make up line, as she refuses to wear anything that has been tested on animals. She said she doesn’t often change her beauty products and tends to opt for the ‘less is more approach’.

‘I like to go for taupe colours, a really natural look. I like products that enhance, rather than mask your face. I don’t tend to experiment a lot with make-up, I just do what I do, but I like to play with different lip colours.’

However, the model should perhaps look at her daily skin care routine if she wants to try and manage her outbreaks. French pharmaceutical company Avene has a great range for treating skin prone to spots. Here is a step-by-step guide to how to use The Avene Cleanance range for problematic skin.

Step- 1

Splash face with water and wash with Cleanance Soap Free Gel Cleanser, rinse thoroughly and pat dry. This Soap-free cleanser eliminates impurities and excess sebum without stripping the skin.

Step- 2

Step- 3

Fact. You CAN Look 10 Years Younger

Many people often wonder “How Will I Look In 10 Years?” But a new study has shown that by having a combination of cosmetic treatments you can actually look ten years younger, now.

For the first time, a study by the University of Toronto, has found that cosmetic treatments can take up to an average of nine years from person’s age appearance.

In addition to quantifying the procedure’s ‘youth-giving’ effects, researchers found that the findings held true even when the patients were younger to begin with. They also took into account other factors, which could potentially influence a person’s looks.

Perhaps one of the most interesting conclusions from the research, (published in a report by The Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery) was that the more individual procedures the patient had, the greater the number of years between real and perceived ages.

Patients looked nine years younger if they had had a combination of 3 different procedures. The findings demonstrated direct correlation between looking younger and having a varied number of treatments.

Forty first-year medical students were shown before and after photos of 60 year-olds. They were then asked to estimate the ages of the 53 women and 7 men before having any treatments and then afterwards

The patients had all had a variety of facial treatments and had each undergone between one and three procedures. 22 had a face and neck tightening, 17 had a face and neck tightening as well as an eyelid lift and a further 22 had a face and neck tightening, an eyelid lift and Botox.

Perhaps to be expected, those patients who had had more lifts looked notably younger than their peers who had had fewer procedures.

Those who had undergone one procedure looked an average of 5.7 years younger, while those who had had two procedures appeared 7.5 years younger.

The patients who had a total of three skin procedures, looked 8.4 years younger, in the eyes of the medical students.

The study has help strengthen evidence in the industry that not only do skin rejuvenation treatments work, but the results are visible in the perception of those around us.

The process of having these treatments must be done over the course of several weeks- even months. This can be favourable though. The cumulative effects of having a package of treatments means you will ultimately look younger, but the gradual progression to younger looking skin won’t be overly obvious to your friends.

Many celebrities undergo cosmetic treatments to ensure they look their best when on the red carpet and in front of the cameras. Demi Moore spends thousands of dollars maintaining her quite remarkable appearance. Many plastic surgeons and doctors have said that in their professional opinion Demi has undergone several treatments including Botox, rehydration fillers, Titan neck tightening and fractional CO2 laser treatment.

Catherine Zeta Jones Has “No Reservations” About Botox

When Catherine Zeta Jones stepped out last week with her husband, Michael Douglas, it wasn’t Mr. Douglas’s good health that was causing whispers amongst guests and journalists. Catherine appeared to be sporting a rather youthful appearance for her 42 years. An appearance many have attributed to a visit to a cosmetic doctor.

As a known smoker, Catherine Zeta Jones is one of many women who have suffer the side affects of smoking. Smoking causes skin to dramatically age, so it was particularly surprising to see Catherine with a flawless complexion. The Welsh film star looked healthy and line free when she appeared alongside her husband at the 2012 Windward School benefit at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.

Celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn, spoke to Radar.com about Catherine’s new look. He said, “Catherine Zeta-Jones looks like she’s beginning to follow in her husband Michael Douglas’ plastic surgery footsteps,”

“Her cheeks look somewhat plump, and may be due to injections of a filler like Sculptra. Her forehead and crows feet are also very smooth for a woman her age, likely a result of Botox injections,” he explained.

The smoothness of her cheeks makes Catherine look young and healthy, and while she is both, the healthy skin tone of her cheeks may have been supplemented with a small amount of filler. This helps explain the lack of lines around her mouth as well as the firmness of her lower face.

Dr. Youn explained, “Botox is typically not injected under the eyes, though, hence the wrinkles in her lower eyelids,”

It’s not safe to use Botox below the eyes, so there are still fine lines and wrinkles there, but the tops and outer edges of the eye are smooth and healthy looking. Catherine is a perfect example of how a combination of Botox and fillers can help keep the face young with minimal intervention.

Catherine and her family have been under significant stress since husband Michael was diagnosed with throat cancer in August 2012. It is therefore understandable that given the recent stress and persistent press scrutiny, Catherine may have needed some help from non-surgical treatments. She has however, managed to strike a balance between preserving her natural beauty and stalling the sands of time.

Kitchen cupboard remedies

Though celebrities may have hundreds to splash out on expensive fad beauty treatments, the recipe for looking good doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We’ve gathered some top natural beauty tips from celeb-land – all you need to do is raid your kitchen cupboards!

Welsh beauty Catherine Zeta Jones swears by strawberries for their natural teeth whitening properties. She also uses honey as a fantastic way to enhance her skin. By mixing an egg, a dash of olive oil, a spoonful of honey and a few drops of rosewater, you can make a sweet smelling and hydrating face mask. This can help banish winter dry skin, and most importantly, is fantastically easy to make.

There are many treatments and remedies available for spots and acne but they’re often harsh on the skin. Cameron Diaz is said to regularly use powdered milk as a gentle exfoliant for her spot prone complexion. Using two teaspoons of powdered milk, gently rub on a damp face and neck for a smoothing effect. This leaves your skin supple and cleansed without drying it out.

Jennifer Love Hewitt uses a dab of white toothpaste applied to spots after cleansing to shrink and reduce redness. Use this with care if you’ve got sensitive skin, but it can help to dry out spots quickly – make sure to moisturise as well. If you need more help with acne, here at Natura we offer some brilliant acne treatments that can give great results.

Though these tips are cheap and easy to try, the best beauty tips really are those that are free. Drinking plenty of water, getting a good night’s sleep and doing plenty of exercise are all essential for maintaining our natural beauty.

If you do need any more help with your skin care, here at Natura we are dedicated to achieving natural looking beauty. We are here to give a helping hand!

Courteney Cox Opens Up About Ageing

Getting older in LA, in front of the scrutiny of the media can be a rough time. Especially when you’re the star of a global TV show for a decade, commanding a million dollars per episode in its final two series.

So its no wonder that 43 year old Courtney Cox admitted recently that she too treats her fine lines and wrinkles with a little help from one of her friends, Botox.

Gracing the cover of InStyle Magazine the actress talked openly about how she manages to keep herself looking young.

“Aging gracefully is one thing, but trying to slow it down is another. Sometimes I use Botox. Compared to most, I use it very sparingly”

Courteney is more recently know for her role in another hit TV show “Cougar Town” and with its success has brought many more public appearances where she faces the glare of the camera. Non-surgical treatments such as Botox, when administered professionally, can achieve quick and painless results. Courteney strikes the perfect balance between visible yet natural looking results.

Like many women Courteney recognises the importance of having the right people carry out the treatments.

“I don’t have a problem with any of that stuff; if it makes you feel better about yourself and it’s done properly, then fine.”

The actress went on to tell the magazine that she researches ways of keeping a youthful appearance. For many women getting older can be a hard time and more often than not it isn’t because they feel old, its because the tell tale signs of ageing are beginning to show.

“Getting older isn’t easy for anybody. Especially here in Los Angeles. So let’s be clear: looking youthful is something I do a lot of research on. Man, I could use some Botox right now.”

So, if like Courteney you are thinking about having Botox, what should you look for?

1. How much should you have?

Botox shouldn’t give you a frozen face. Remember sometimes less is more.

2. Who should administer it?

If you want visible yet natural looking results ensure your Botox is administered by an experienced doctor.

3. Do your research

Speak to your doctor and get a professional opinion on whether Botox is the right treatment for you.

Kate Winslet Believes In (Looking) Better In New Sky TV Advert

Kate Winslet - Harpers Bazaar

In 2011 Kate Winslet spoke out against plastic surgery with the support of fellow Brit actresses Emma Thompson and Rachel Weisz. In an interview with Glamour magazine Kate was asked if she had changed over the last six years, because she had jokingly told them in 2005 that she might be getting lipo and Botox in her 30s. Well, did she?

“My face is still moving, right? No, I have never tried any of that stuff…. I don’t have parts of my body that I hate or would like to trade for somebody else’s or wish I could surgically adjust into some fantasy version of what they are,” Winslet replied,

“It goes against my morals, the way that my parents brought me up and what I consider to be natural beauty, I will never give in.

But a year on Kate appears to be suspiciously smooth for her 35 years, appearing to not have aged since her role in 1997 blockbuster Titanic. Starring in the a new advert for Sky TV, the 35 year old would appear to have undergone some non-surgical work, most likely Botox.

So what’s the verdict?

Kate has managed to achieve a perfect balance. Expertly administered Botox means Kate is still able to move her face whilst at the same time tackling the onset of wrinkles. Looking naturally youthful without a hint of the dreaded ‘frozen face’.

Perhaps she is like many other actresses who don’t consider a little Botox and/or fillers to be a ‘surgical procedure’ (notice Kate’s emphasis on “surgical”).

Whether she admits it or not, Kate has proved you don’t need a titanic amount of Botox. A little goes a long way!

Vintage Style Swimwear Makes A Comeback

In a scene in the 1956 film, High Society, Grace Kelly kneels poolside pushing a model boat, True Love, across the still water. She wore a white halter-neck swimsuit, which ended with a short white, ruffled skirt. Never had the swimsuit seemed so elegant.

Swimwear trends don’t move in quite the same cycles as other fashion trends. That’s because it’s hard to reinvent the bikini or swimsuit: the need to balance functionality and design means that designers are limited to what they can actually do. So it would seem that many designers are drawing on vintage styles from the 1950-1960’s as inspiration for their collections this season.

Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection featured pristine, white understated swimwear, reminiscent of Grace’s in High Society.

With summer just around the corner, the high street is full of swimwear already. But what do all women want to go with their new beach wear?

A beach body.

At Natura we can help you look great in any swimwear with our cellulite treatment, Velashape. Popular amongst celebrities and sports stars alike, this treatment delivers fantastic results.

How Does It Work?

It works by precision-heating the upper layers of the skin and the deeper tissue, while specially designed rollers massage the area, smoothing the skin and combating the appearance of cellulite. This system of light vacuum and deep massage increases the metabolism of stored energy, shrinks the fat cells and vastly improves lymphatic drainage, banishing unsightly lumps and bumps.

Available from March 21st prices start at £150 a treatment, with discounts on courses.

Oscar winning skin

Oscars 2012

The Oscars have only just called ‘cut’, and we’re already on the red carpet trail for the best celebrity hair and beauty looks. From glamorous to edgy, this year’s offerings are a great advert for natural looking beauty.

Luscious Locks

For Hollywood hair, one of the biggest trends was the glamorous quiff. From sleek and sophisticated to tousled and easy going, this was one of the most successful and widely embraced looks of the night.

Viola Davis, nominated as Best Actress for The Help, was one of the big beauty hits of the night. After taking her husband’s advice, she left her wigs behind and embraced her natural hair, sporting a short and stylish copper cut. She said, ‘It gives me flavour. It makes me feel like I’m spicing my life up a bit.’ The Natura office definitely agrees, and we love her natural locks.

Amongst the looks that got an inevitable thumbs down from critics included Sandra Bullocks’s severe ponytail, her hair extensions overwhelming an otherwise sophisticated ensemble. The strong fringe was another dangerous look. Bridesmaids star Ellie Kemper missed the mark, although Rooney Mara’s effortless makeup, perfect pout and porcelain skin saved her from the dreaded worst dressed lists.

Glowing Skin

Clean and natural make up was the overwhelming winner of the night. Heavy and caked on make-up was nowhere to be seen, stars preferring to let their glowing skin and bright eyes do the talking.

Gwyneth Paltrow was perhaps the stand out of the night. Knocking everyone’s socks off with a Tom Ford dress and cape straight from the catwalk, she shone on the red carpet. Her chic wardrobe was complimented by her understated makeup and healthy, glowing skin. This was the best accessory of the night, and shows that taking good care of your skin can make or break an outfit.

We’re obviously big fans of natural beauty, and we’re glad the 2012 Oscars seemed to feel the same.

Picture Perfect Jennifer’s Laser Obsession

Jennifer Aniston CO2 Laser

With a new film out and a recent induction to the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, Jennifer Aniston has had a great start to 2012. The actress looks far younger than her 43 years, but how is she maintaining that picture perfect complexion?

Last night the Marley and Me star opened up and revealed exactly how she manages to stay looking so youthful. Speaking to Conan O’Brien on his late-night chatshow, Jennifer revealed that she has become obsessed with laser therapy.

The former Friends star admitted that as a true ‘California Girl’ she spent years basking in the sun which despite making her feel good, left her skin with sun spots and the early signs of aging.

Aniston explained: ‘I did this thing called like, a peel. It’s extremely intense – you don’t realise you look like a battered burn victim for a week!’ she said,

She went on: ‘Then [the dead skin on your face] just kind of falls off – for eight days.’

Jennifer Aniston Fractional C02Jennifer Aniston Laser Peel

The CO2 laser Aniston is a fan of works by causing the outer layers of the epidermis to peel away as the skin heals. The laser heats the dermis, which stimulates the production of new collagen. As the new skin cells develop, the face becomes smoother, firmer and more youthful.

But you needn’t travel to Hollywood to achieve the same A-Lister results as Jennifer. At Natura Skin Clinic we offer the same cutting edge laser technology used to achieve Aniston’s fantastic results, the SmartXide Laser.

Perhaps Jennifer just let slip one of Hollywood’s biggest kept skin secrets.

Oil and skin

For most of us, oils are the last thing we’d want to put on our skin. Though they have a reputation for clogging pores and making hair greasy, the right oils actually contain an abundance of essential vitamins, minerals and fatty acids.

Oils can re-balance, moisturise, protect and brighten skin while improving texture and tone. They penetrate deeper into the skin than creams and can therefore be more effective in balancing our complexions, helping with dehydration, dryness, lines – and even excess oil.

Indeed, oil based cleansers can, surprisingly, be good for oily skin. Harsh ‘oily skin’ products can strip the skin of its natural moisture which in the long term makes the skin overcompensate and produce excess sebum. An oil based cleanser works by attracting other oils without stealing the skin’s natural moisture.

For hydration, try a nut or seed based oil. Almond and plum kernel oils can be used to boost the skin’s natural barriers, which help to keep moisture in.

Cosmetic oils are all the rage with celebrities. Victoria Beckham herself used oils to avoid pregnancy stretch marks, and Emma Stone, of The Help and Crazy, Stupid, Love fame, credits her glowing skin to regular use of grape oil. Actress Emily Blunt swears by olive oil to give smooth and supple skin, although this particular regimen is to be avoided if you already have oil-prone skin.

Oils are also effective hair care treatments. They penetrate deeply and can mend split ends and banish frizz and dryness. Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrients for luscious locks, and can help to prevent dry scalps and dandruff.

Jennifer Lopez, however, has a more unusual use for oil. She is reported to carry a bottle of grapefruit oil to sniff, apparently warding off hunger and reducing between meal snacking.

Though this final habit is perhaps a little strange, the benefits of oils to skin and hair care can help some annoying problems – they are definitely worth thinking about next time you change your beauty regime!
