Acne: Not Just a Teenage Problem

Acne is not just a problem which teenagers have to worry about. With more than 50% of women having suffered from acne at some point during their lives, the condition is becoming more widespread in those well beyond their teenage years.

What is acne?

Acne is caused by an overproduction of oil in the glands of the skin, which blocks hair follicles causing spots and inflammation. This is often worsened by hormone imbalances, especially an excess of testosterone. Spots most frequently appear on the face, but can spread all over the body. They range from tiny whiteheads to large, uncomfortable cysts which can cause scarring and discolouration.

Most people experience acne at some point in their lives, but for some this is an ongoing and serious condition. Adult acne can be especially embarrassing and painful, and can lead to low self esteem and even depression.

What treatments are there?

There isn’t a single miracle cure, and doctors will prescribe a range of treatment options. However, there are a few things you can do in the mean time to give your skin a helping hand.

Younger sufferers should opt for lightweight, non-clogging skincare products. Though your skin may be producing quite a bit of oil at this stage, don’t overdo harsh cleansers – this can lead to the skin producing even more oil to compensate.

Slightly older skin loses elasticity and starts to heal more slowly. It’s therefore important to be proactive to combat breakouts. Treating your skin to a three step skin care program of cleansing, clarifying and hydrating can get rid of impurities without drying your skin.

Acne sufferers may begin to notice signs of rosacea – the first symptoms are flushed and bumpy cheeks. Being proactive in treatment can again help to prevent any worsening of this condition.

Natura offer acne treatments both for active acne and acne scarring. A course of three to four light laser treatments can go a long way to help reduce active acne. Once you’ve managed to get your acne under control, you can start to think about treating the scarring that might be left behind. Our cutting edge fractional CO2 laser scar removal can minimise the appearance of scarring, which might just reveal a brand new you, with a younger, fresher and smoother complexion.
